| Boksburg Street Church The service started in 1998 when a group of ladies inspired by city transformation went from business to business to pray and uplift the community. In the process of calling from door to door their attention was drawn to the homeless community in Boksburg. Having compassion on the homeless they started carrying sandwiches with them so as to hand out where the most need was seen. This very quickly evolved to a full blown feeding scheme that was done on Wednesday of every week. During this time the feeding scheme was funded by New Hope Ministries themselves. In 2001 it was decided to change the feeding scheme to twice weekly at two separate venues. This was implemented and the scheme changed its feeding days to Tuesdays and Thursdays. As of to date an average of 150 people are feed on a daily basis. The numbers vary as a result of weather, availability of employment. Winter and festive seasons are a particularly busy period. The quality of food provided is very good as New Hope Ministries decided at the out set that they would supply only nutritional and good wholesome food. Where applicable Aids clinics are held and with the help of a volunteer sister people are referred to the local government hospitals. With the assistance of the Child Welfare and Food & Garden foundation a farming project has now been launched The scheme has noted an increase of homeless and jobless people on the East Rand and finds themselves looking to increase the feeding days. The obvious reason for this is due to unemployment in the area. The problem however to accommodate any further development is one of logistics. All the cooking and food storage is being done from the founders home. This is fast becoming a problem as far as space and damage to the kitchen is concerned. The added difficulty of transporting large pots in an old sedan is also a concern. What ideally would suite the project is a warehouse or old house in the area that could be renovated to accommodate a feeding kitchen as well as storage facility. Even if the project was to obtain premises the additional financial load could not be accommodated with the current income YOUR HELP IS MOST NEEDED! |
